If you speak Spanish and have been to Spain you probably have seen this viral Tik Tok video lately:
In this AI generated video Trump sings Flamenco with Spain’s President Pedro Sánchez in a typical Spanish bar. In the bar we also see Spain’s opposition’s leaders, Marco Rubio and Sanchez’ wife. Bars in Spain are of course, a central part of life.
The musical genre is rumba flamenca (also known as Rumba Catalana). For those of you who are not too familiar with current Spanish politics, I discuss some interesting details below.
First the transcript and translation:
Oye Pedro, ni con vino, ni jamón
Hey, Pedro, even if you give me wine and (Spanish cured) ham
Dejaré de usar mis bases de Rota y de Morón
I won’t stop using my bases at Rota and Moron
Rota and Moron are NATO and U.S. bases inside Spain, which Spain has blocked the U.S. from using in the Iran war. Before Spain became a member of NATO in 1982, the bases were exclusively American. Spain’s membership in NATO is still controversial because it was confirmed by a referendum with only 52.54% of the vote.
Quiero mis barcos mis hombres allí,
I want my ships and men there,
No me vengas Pedro, con un no a mi.
Come on Pedro, don’t say no to me
Si me opongo saldré en las portadas
If I oppose, I will be on the headlines.
Y la prioridad ahora es mi propia fama
My own fame now is my only concern.
Spain’s president, Pedro Sánchez, has been heavily criticized in Spain for being only interested in himself and not in Spain. His party didn’t win the majority in Spain’s last elections in 2023. He managed to become president by forming a majority government with other political parties. In those elections not one single party in Spain won the majority of parliamentary votes.
As soon as Sánchez says “la prioridad” we see his wife, Begoña Gómez, dancing Flamenco. She is now being investigated by the government for alleged influence peddling, corruption in business, and public embezzlement.
Si quieres mover algo de Rota y Morón
If you want to move something in Rota and Moron
Esconde en una base a mi amigo Puigdemont
Hide my friend Puigdemont in one of the bases
Puigdemont is the current president of the Catalonian Independence Party of Spain. He has an active warrant for alleged embezzlement. This comes after his involvement in the disputed illegal referendum and declaration of independence from Spain in 2017. At that time, he was the President of the government of Catalonia. President Sánchez needed to form a majority government and be president of Spain in 2023. To achieve this goal, he had to agree to Junts‘ demand of Amnesty for some of their political leaders. He also had to make other concessions. This is the reason for the “friend” of Sánchez reference. Puigdemont was also an European member of Parliament from 2019-2022.
Como me llamo Donald te voy a quitar todos los McDonalds
Because I’m Donald I’m going to take away all the McDonalds.
Pues el jamón serrano en la casa lo comprarás en Nebraska
Well you’re not getting any more ham from us you’ll have to buy it in Nebraska then
It’s not clear in the song whether the singer says “en la calle” or “en la casa.” The latter rhymes with “Nebraska” (rima asonante).
Nosotros tenemos cochinos en Colorado y en Luisiana un buen pescado
We do have pigs in Colorado and good fish in Louisiana
Spanish cured ham made from acorn bred black Iberian pigs was once exclusively found and produced in Spain. Its exports were illegal to the US due to Swine flue and other diseases. Nevertheless, as of 2013, this particular type of swine is also bred in the U.S.
Hilariously Marco Rubio appears now in Trump’s defense.
Nosotros las mejores aceitunas y una tortilla papas como ninguna
Well we have the best olives and a potato omelette like no other
Spaniards like to make fun of themselves. They sometimes humorously say the only good thing out of their country is their most common food. This food is a tortilla de papas, also referred to as patatas.
Pues si no cedes, me largo de aquí
Well if you don’t give in, I’m out of here
Sin mis dólares, España va a sufrir
Without my dollars Spain will suffer
Mis turistas de golf, mi gran capital
My golf playing tourists, my great wealth
España sin mi, se vuelve en un lugar fatal
Spain without me will become a terrible place
In the video, none other than Milei and Puigdemont play the guitar. Milei is of course a great fan and friend of President Trump. Argentina has the largest population of Spaniards outside of Spain (about 500,000).
Eating at the table are opposition leaders Santiago Abascal, president of the conservative right wing party Vox. Alongside him is Alberto Núñez Feijóo, president of the Partido Popular, a center right wing party. They are eating cured ham while enjoying a glass of wine. At first they are agreeable of Trump’s protest of Sanchez’s ban. Then at the end of the video, they are terrified of Trump’s warning. They would agree it may bring financial ruin to Spain.
